The 124th Psalm

1. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;  1. With no deity for holiness, we had a bad loss to our enemy in a war.
2. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: 2. O, ruthless men hate us! If no God is near, behind us, we'd not hope to win a war.
3. Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: 3. We'd quake, spying that wild heathen assault which would sink us netherward.
4. Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:  4. Oh the torment! Angered, the murderous waves overhead wash us to hell.
5. Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.  5.  An ogre's threat would then devour our hopes.
6. Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.  6. Peril? Stand true; ever obey God, who halts the heathen host's bite.
7. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.  7. Flustered, in a satanic trap, we break free of our bonds: as its chords loosen, we see sure hope ahead.
8. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.  8. We heap the adoration on him; from hell underneath, he saved.
