The 124th Psalm
| 1. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; | 1. With no deity for holiness, we had a bad loss to our enemy in a war. |
| 2. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: | 2. O, ruthless men hate us! If no God is near, behind us, we'd not hope to win a war. |
| 3. Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: | 3. We'd quake, spying that wild heathen assault which would sink us netherward. |
| 4. Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: | 4. Oh the torment! Angered, the murderous waves overhead wash us to hell. |
| 5. Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. | 5. An ogre's threat would then devour our hopes. |
| 6. Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. | 6. Peril? Stand true; ever obey God, who halts the heathen host's bite. |
| 7. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. | 7. Flustered, in a satanic trap, we break free of our bonds: as its chords loosen, we see sure hope ahead. |
| 8. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. | 8. We heap the adoration on him; from hell underneath, he saved. |
